Ed's Holiday Glühwein

(German Mulled Wine)

Ingredients:
  • 4 bottles cheap, dry Red Wine (Burgundy, Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon, etc.)
  • 2 cups Sugar
  • 2 cups Water
  • 6 Cinnamon sticks
  • 12 Cloves
  • 1 tbs Nutmeg
  • 2 Oranges, sliced
  • 4 tbs Rum or Brandy (optional)
  • Directions:
Wrap cinnamon sticks and cloves in cheesecloth and tie it off. In a large pot, bring water, sugar, nutmeg and spice pack to a low boil, stirring to dissolve sugar. Throw in the orange slices that were cut from the ends of the oranges, i.e. have more orange peel than fruit. Lower heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Lower heat some more, allowing water to cool below boil/simmer point.
Add wine and nutmeg. Add rum or brandy if desired. It is important to not allow the wine to boil. Boiling burns off the alcohol (unless you want a non-alcoholic, mulled drink.) When wine is warmed up again, pour into serving container (punch bowl or crock pot turned to Low works great.) Float orange slices on top. Serve.
    Prost!
